Rick Ryder is a queer reimagining of the hypermasculine action hero, designed as both homage and critique of late 90s and early 2000s video game protagonists. With the tagline “No mission too tough, no outfit too tight,” Rick unapologetically embraces homoerotic flair, exaggeration, and performative masculinity.

Inspired by characters such as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater’s Snake and Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, as well as the iconic yellow jumpsuit worn by Uma Thurman in Kill Bill: Volume 1, Rick deliberately mirrors and inverts the design tropes historically applied to female avatars. Where female bodies were hypersexualized for the male gaze, Rick’s muscular physique, skin-tight bodysuit, harness, and impractical boots reclaim the male body as an object of desire.

The project responds to the absence and sanitization of queer male representation in mainstream games. While titles like Life Is Strange and The Last of Us feature queer relationships, they often remain structured in ways that are more palatable to heteronormative audiences. Rick Ryder instead centers unapologetic homoeroticism, pushing beyond optional queerness toward a visibly embodied, desirous queer masculinity.

Developed in Unreal Engine, the character explores digital embodiment as both aesthetic and political terrain. By queering the hypermasculine form, the project interrogates why male avatars have historically remained desexualized while female avatars were objectified. Rick operates as a playful but pointed disruption of that imbalance, transforming exaggeration, spectacle, and stylization into tools of critique.
